Hello Alabama Region!

Congratulations to all of our distinguished members, officers, officer teams, advisors, and chapters recognized at Annual (International) Convention in Orlando! I am so proud to have the honor to be called your Regional President.

Cheyenne Higdon

You all worked hard to achieve your Five Star goals, and every chapter's accomplishment played a part in our overall success as a Region. Once again, for the second year in a row, the Alabama Region was chosen as one of the three Distinguished Regions in the world! This award could not have been achieved without the help and support of our excellent members and advisors. Your participation in achieving our regional goals was the deciding factor in our success as a Region. If we are named as a Distinguished Region again next year, we will receive the Continued Excellence Award. We will present the 2014 Regional Goals soon, so we can all get started on another successful year. Congratulations to the 2013-2014 Regional Officer Team for the excellent job they did to lead, support, and encourage our chapters.

President - Jeff Patterson
District 1 VP - John Clements
District 2 VP - Gabe Marrero
District 3 VP - Laura Tidmore

They were an outstanding Regional Team, and I hope that with your support, our team can become as amazing as theirs.

We are all about to start on a new journey as we begin to explore our new Honors Study Topic: "Frontiers and the Spirit of Exploration." Our roadmap is contained in the Honors in Action Program Guide. The Guide is designed to help us develop our Honors in Action projects the way it was intended: First, research -- THEN action. The Guide's format will help you to actually do the research first, and not just find research to back up the action you have already planned. I know this is difficult. At our Regional Officer Retreat last week we started to work on the Regional Honors in Action Project. I'm not going to lie, I felt like we were never going to settle on a theme, but then finally it clicked, and we all agreed on a theme that would allow the whole Region to participate. I am excited to announce the 2014 Regional Honors in Action Project will be on Theme 4: Exploring the Natural Environment! Our research question is "In what ways do environmental factors affect poverty?"

This brings me to a very important leadership opportunity for you chapter. We would like for you to select one member to represent your chapter on the Regional Research Team. This person can be a chapter officer or an active member. Research Team members will have a leadership role at the 2014 Regional Honors in Action Leadership Conference in September. The team members and their chapters will be recognized at the 2015 Regional Convention. We have selected some initial research materials for the team members, and will welcome additional sources. We are planning a Research Team meeting at the Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi in August, and encourage your advisors and officers to attend. We will send more information on the trip as soon as we confirm a date.

Please email me contact information (name, email, phone number) as soon as your Research Team member is selected.

As we start on this new journey, many challenges await. We have to juggle school, work, Phi Theta Kappa, a social life, and some of us have to add kids and other family responsibilities into that mix. It is okay to recognize that you can't to it all. Let me clarify, I'm not saying to stop doing stuff, I'm saying that it is okay to ask for help sometimes. We're all human and we all need help.

Just know that there are people in your chapter willing to help if you will give them a specific task. And the Regional Team is also here to help you whenever we can. We are all just an email/text/phone call away. Feel free to contact us anytime for help or just if you have a question. If there is anything the other regional officers or I can do to help with your projects, do not hesitate to ask.

We would like to see even more from the Alabama Region called up on the stage for even more awards next year in San Antonio!

I look forward to hearing from all of you soon!
