AUGUST 2012

Greetings District 2!

I trust that this letter finds you well, and I hope that you had a fantastic summer! Now that the fall semester is officially underway, it’s important to stay on top of things with your Phi Theta Kappa chapter!

The Regional team is very excited about our Regional Honors in Action project. We have nine chapters from all over the Region participating in the project! This is a great way for chapters to learn more about the Honors in Action process and to be involved on the Regional level. Each chapter’s representative needs to post their research and a brief summary of the research to our project’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/groups/al.hia.research/). They will need three to five sources.

On August 13th, the Regional Officer team, along with members and officers of several other chapters, traveled to the Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi! While there, we were able to speak with Susan Edwards, Dean of Honors Programs at Phi Theta Kappa, about our Regional Honors in Action Project. She suggested that we look for various academic articles for and against the subject we are researching. The analysis of the research is very important when looking at what will make a difference in the community. She also suggested that we make sure our project has a measureable impact. These are all things you can implement in your own Honors in Action Projects.

Our next Regional event, the Honors in Action Leadership Conference, is coming up September 14th-15th. This event will be held at the 4H Center in Columbiana and is open to all members, officers, and advisors. The Regional Officer team looks forward to seeing you all there, as all attendees will benefit from leadership and teambuilding skills, as well as scholarly fellowship with other Alabama Phi Theta Kappans. Also, our Division 2 International Vice President, Ryan Lake, will be attending! We are so excited and thankful that he will be taking the time to visit with us!

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have concerning your chapter or the Region as a whole. Also, please send me the dates for your fall induction ceremony and for any meetings or events you have planned. I would love to attend!

Have a great week, and I hope to see you in Columbiana!

Sincerely,
Jessica

JULY 2012

Greetings District 2 Phi Theta Kappans!

I’m Jessica Nickolson, Regional Officer for District 2.

This past weekend we held our annual Mock Chapter event for Districts 1 and 2. Let me just say that it was a blast! I had so much fun and learned some new things that I look forward to implementing in my chapter throughout the upcoming year. I hope those of you who were able to attend had fun and learned some new things as well. I would like to especially thank my home chapter, Omicron Upsilon, and our fabulous advisor, Mr. James Blair, at Central Alabama, Alexander City campus, for all the hard work they put into hosting this event. I believe they did a fabulous job! I would also like to thank the Athens State Alumni Association for attending Mock Chapter – we always appreciate the support they show the Alabama Region! We would love to hear your comments on Mock Chapter, so please make sure to complete the survey that is being sent out. For those of you who were unable to attend Mock Chapter, we missed you and wish you had been with us. You definitely missed a great experience!

Those of you who have pictures from Mock Chapter, please be sure to send them to me so I can get them to the Regional Coordinator, as we would love to have the pictures displayed on the Region’s website http://alptk.com/. I would like to be able to place the pictures on our District’s Facebook page as well https://www.facebook.com/PhiThetaKappaAlabamaRegionDistrict2

.

As those of you who attended are aware, we discussed the Regional Goals for 2012-2013 at Mock Chapter. I trust that you all received the copy of these goals and the explanation of the Regional HiA project that was emailed to you by the Regional Coordinator a few weeks ago. If you need another copy, please let me know and I will make sure you get one. Also, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Regional Goals or HiA project. I would love to be of help in any way possible.

The next event coming up for the Alabama Region of Phi Theta Kappa is the Fall Leadership Conference. As some of you may already know, this year’s conference will be held at the 4-H Center in Columbiana. The dates for this event are September 14-15; this is a Friday/Saturday event. We hope that all of you will be able to attend as we are planning on having a great time! We have plans for an obstacle course, a chance to swim, a volleyball area, and we may even have a few surprises for you all so please do your best to attend!

I hope everyone is looking forward to the fall semester. As the new school year starts, please keep me in mind for your chapter’s events. I would really love to keep in touch with everyone and visit each chapter at least once. When you set dates for chapter events and meetings, please send me the dates. I really would love to visit everyone! Also, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any concerns or questions you may have. My greatest desire is to be here to help you all for any reason you may need me.

Advisors, I will also be sending this letter to your officers.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Jessica

JUNE 2012

Greetings, District 2 Phi Theta Kappans!

I hope that you have had time to start your research on the Honors Study Topic, “The Culture of Competition.” Keep in mind that a good source of academic information can be found at your school's library. If you need help getting started, please don't hesitate to contact me. Good luck to you all! We want this year to be the best yet for the Alabama Region!

As you may know, the other Regional Officers and myself recently returned from the Honors Institute in Denver Colorado. Twenty members and advisors from the Alabama Region attended this event. We were inspired by amazing speakers like Laura Ling. She discussed her journey of hope: A Story about the Culture of Competition and Cooperation. Among other speakers we had the honor of having King Peggy present to us her journey from Secretary to King: Transforming a Culture of Competition and Cooperation. I hope that next year we can have even more members from the Alabama Region attend this event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!

Coming up next is our Mock Chapter Event. The dates are July 13 for District 3, and July 27 for Districts 1 and 2. This is a FREE event, open to all Phi Theta Kappa members, officers, and advisors. The Phi Theta Kappa mission statement states that our purpose is to “recognize and encourage scholarship among college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service.” The Alabama Region would like you to participate in this event where you can benefit from team-building and leadership skills, as well as fellowship with other scholars like yourselves. I encourage all members, officers and advisors to join us for either of the Mock Chapter events. I have attached the flyer for Mock Chapter that was emailed to you previously, just in case.

Again, I would like to stay in touch throughout the summer and fall, and hear from each of you about your chapter’s activities. So as soon as you can, please send me your new officer and/or advisor information, and pictures of your chapter's fall and/or spring induction of new members. It would be great if we could have every chapter in our District featured on alptk.com, the Alabama Region’s website. When you plan your chapter meetings and special events for fall semester, please send me those dates. I would like to visit each of you at some point during the year, and hope you’ll call on me and my chapter if you need help with any of your chapter activities. I look forward to seeing each chapter progress throughout the year and I hope to see you at Mock Chapter!

Sincerely,
Jessica

Greetings, fellow Phi Theta Kappans!

I'm Jessica Nickolson, your new Vice President of District 2 for 2012-2013. My hometown is Sylacauga, Alabama, where I have lived my entire life. I live with my mother and younger brother, and during my spare time I enjoy reading, shopping, playing various musical instruments, and writing southern gospel songs.

I am currently enrolled in my second semester at the Alexander City campus of Central Alabama Community College, which is about 30 minutes south of my hometown. I am a full-time student, and my extracurricular activities include playing keyboard for the CACC jazz band and being an active member of Phi Theta Kappa. In the fall of 2013, I plan to transfer to UAB and complete a bachelor's degree in either Applied Health Sciences or Nursing.

Although everything about Phi Theta Kappa is still new to me, I am very excited about the upcoming year! I believe that serving as Vice President of District 2 will open doors of opportunity I could have never dreamed of. I am looking forward to working with my fellow regional officers to make the Alabama Region one of the best in the entire organization.

Football coach George Halas once said, "Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it." By being invited into Phi Theta Kappa, we have already proven that we know how to give our best. I would like to encourage all of you to continue on this path you have set for yourself. If any of you wish to contact me, my email is guitargirl093@yahoo.com . I will be happy to hear from you and will do my best to answer any questions you may have regarding Phi Theta Kappa.

God bless!
Jessica
